March is arriving with two holidays! The first is of course St Patrick’s Day. I’ve put together a facebook cover image with a spring theme incorporating butterflies, a rainbow, and of course shamrock flowers. Come back on March 18th and I’ll have an Easter facebook cover for you!

If you absolutely can’t wait for the cover image, just scroll down to the end of the this post for the download link.

Designing the Facebook Cover

My inspiration for this St Patrick’s Day image was an image by Rob Gonyea. I used a similar green gradient background to start off. I also used Illustrator’s Image Trace tool to isolate and reuse one of his butterflies. The butterfly provided an excellent addition to the springtime feeling that I was looking for.

With the green background and butterflies, I wanted to add some white. I liked the springtime feel of flowers, so I added in some clover inspired white flowers. The clover was created using a heart shape duplicated at 90 degree increments.

To balance the white flowers in the lower right I used white text in the upper left. For the font I wanted a traditional serif, but with an updated twist. I used Poly which gave a nice festive balance.

The facebook cover image was getting a bit too green for my tastes, so I added a splash of color. The rainbow is inspired by the traditional pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I didn’t want to actually incorporate an actual pot of gold since my theme was springtime, not leprechauns. Maybe next year.

Please download and enjoy. Also, we’d love it if you would share with your friends by tweeting or liking this post!

The graphics are free to use for personal or commercial purposes, but you can not resell them or claim them as your own.
