I’ve put together a beach themed sunset facebook cover image for summer. It’s inspired by a photo I took while visiting the west coast. My focus on this was on the color gradients, so I hope you enjoy!
Palm Tree Beach Themed Summer Facebook Cover Image
A photo that I took a couple years ago in California inspired this particular image. I decided to focus on the gradients of color and create a vibrant but calm image.
As always to get started I set up a standard canvas in Adobe Illustrator of 851 pixels wide by 315 pixels tall. Since I wanted to make sure to get some nice vibrant colors, I set the color profile to RGB.
To create the backdrop of the sunset sky I started with a rectangle and used a radial gradient with a number of shades of white, yellow, orange, and red. I used a lot of red here to demonstrate the effect the sun has on the atmosphere (which most of the rest of the time looks blue).
Once the red was in place, I layered on some blue. Instead of using a plain rectangle I used the convert anchor point tool to give the horizon line a curve. Since the earth is curved, this provides a little more realism.
The ocean was a bit more work than the sky was. I wanted to create both a gradient but also a highlight showing some of the reflection on the ocean surface.
The first thing I needed was a blue ocean with some texture. I created a rectangle and again curved it to match the curve of the horizon. Then I used the Appearance panel to apply the Texturizer effect. It gave the subtle hint of waves.
I then added a second layer over the ocean and applied a Cort^e Crayon affect to it. This added some more texture to the ocean. I set the opacity to 60% for the layer and used multiply for the blend mode.
To add an ocean surface reflection I drew an ellipse and filled it with a radial gradient from white to translucent. This gave a radiating shimmer on the surface, like the heat of summer.
Please download and enjoy. Also, we’d love it if you would share with your friends by tweeting or liking this post!
